KPMG Finds 92,272 Dead People in Kenyan Voters' Register

An audit by KPMG shows that there are 297,637 voters with duplicate records, 171,496 cases have IDs with erroneous information, while 92,272 of the total number of registered voters are dead.

The information was released by a new report by KPMG who were awarded the tender to scrutinize the Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission’s voters’ register, and clean it ahead of the August 8 elections.

The report further shows that 171,476 ID information are not in tandem with National Bureau’s data base while 17,523 passport records are missing in the database records.

Political factions led by the opposition coalition National Super Alliance have constantly demanded audit and cleaning of the voters’ register to ensure that dead votes are deleted while ‘ghost’ voters are not allowed to vote.

Meanwhile, the poll management body has defied pressure from politicians to award the ballot printing tender of Sh2.5 billion to a Dubai based Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing Company Ltd. NASA opposed awarding the contract to Al Ghurair, doubting its credibility. After wide considerations, IEBC says it settled on Al Ghurair, which will now be printing about 120 million ballot papers for the August 8 polls.

IEBC stated the capacity of the firm, history of work done in Africa and the region, logistics and pricing as some of the reasons it awarded the lucrative contract to the firm.
