Ex Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga Cleared to Contest Senate Seat

John Wanjohi May 29, 2017

Former outlawed Mungiki group leader Maina Njenga has been cleared to contest the Laikipia senatorial seat on a Kenya African National Union (KANU) Party ticket by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Njenga was the first Laikipia county leader to be issued with a certificate from the electoral management body ahead of the August 8 polls.

Four other candidates in Laikipia county senatorial seat presented their papers yesterday with the rest expected today.

Njenga was earlier in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party and had expressed interest to run for the seat on the ruling party ticket, but the party declined to allow him contest, prompting him to decamp to the Kenya’s independent party KANU.

Meanwhile in Nyeri, the youngest Senate aspirant in the country, Steve Maina Nderi was cleared to vie on New Democrats Party ticket.

Nderi, 22, will lock horns with former Mathira legislator Ephraim Maina of Jubilee Party and independent candidates Paul Kanja, Wambugu Nyamu and Daniel Wamahiu.
